Spherical chambers are frequently chosen for high vacuum or UHV applications which require radial component placement, such as PLD and surface science. Their numerous ports with axes oriented through the center of the sphere enable easy access to the centrally situated sample for analysis, measurement, and observation
Spherical chambers are frequently chosen for high vacuum or UHV applications where:
- Surface area must be minimized to reduce outgassing
- The center lines of many attached instruments cross at a common point for interactions with each other or with a sample
- Short, convenient access to a point-in-space needed—for thermal, electrical, or mechanical control for instruments
- Multi-technique surface science system to allow maximum access for each analytical instrument
- Simple rotation aligns the center-mounted sample with a number of ports
Standard Features
- 304 stainless steel hemisphere x 3/16 inch wall
- Brush O.D. and I.D. finish (other finishes available including electropolishing)
- Flanges are knife-edge (ConFlat® style) with through-holes
- Each port’s center-line passes through the sphere’s center point
- Bakeable to 400° C (when fitted with copper-gaskets, blank flanges and pumped)
- Routinely reach pressures in the 10-10 torr range with appropriate surface cleaning/finish and pumping

- 12" (30cm) O.D.
- 18" (45cm) O.D.
Available Options
- Replace KF port with CF style port and/or add additional flanged ports
- Water cooling—trace
- Standard pumping and gauging packages
- Standard frames—carbon steel and extruded aluminum with or without rack mounting
