At Kurt J. Lesker Company we live our SPIRIT Values (Sustainability, Passion, Integrity, Respectful, Innovation, Team). Driving sustainability has become a core focus area as we feel a responsibility to future generations to leave the company and planet better than we found it. Our Corporate Sustainability Program CSP covers a wide range of activities, initiatives, and endeavors that directly tie-in with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals ("SDGs"). We have decided to use the SDGs as a guide in creating our Corporate Sustainability Program as they serve the greater good of humanity.
While our programs and products touch each one of the 17 UNSDGs we are focusing on three specific Sustainable Development Goals to maximize our impact.
The good health and well-being of KJLC's Team members and those in our local communities and elsewhere in the world are a key focus of KJLC's CSP. Throughout the year KJLC holds food, blood, shoe, toy, and bicycle drives. Our Team members participate in the Pittsburgh marathon, the Tough Mudder competition in the U.K. and we hold a Pittsburgh-based 5K Run/Walk on the Montour Trail near KJLC's corporate headquarters. KJLC conducts a Wellness Program, has an on-site fitness center, and offers free biometric screenings and flu shots to its Team members.
Decent work and economic growth is crucial to ensuring a healthy and prosperous community. KJLC is a sponsor of the Pittsburgh based BotsIQ Competition, which helps young minds develop S.T.E.M. skills. KJLC understands that persons who have experienced poverty or other personal struggles may find it difficult to re-enter the job market. To help support and reengage such persons, KJLC works with local charities to set up mock interviews to help prepare people for what they will encounter as they seek to step back into the work force. KJLC also offers internal and external programs aimed at helping our own Team members with their career and leadership development and has in place succession planning to help cover long-term goals.
KJLC understands the value of responsible consumption and production. We incorporate sustainable manufacturing processes into our business. We also realize that so much waste goes to the landfill that could otherwise be recycled. KJLC has undertaken significant efforts to identify recycling providers and is actively recycling (and therefore diverting from landfills) the following items: Plastics; Aluminum/Steel (pure and commercial); Paper/Cardboard; Glass; Batteries; Plastic Grocery Bags; Electronics; Light bulbs.
These are just a sampling of KJLC's CSP initiatives. KJLC's Team members actively engage in and provide new ideas each year for additional CSP activities. From the Executive Team throughout all levels of the organization, SPIRIT and our CSP are at the forefront of who we are and what we do.
These values and practices have benefitted KJLC in many ways. Diving in headfirst with sustainability has improved our company culture, business reputation, operational cost performance, brand recognition, and our ability to attract and retain talent. KJLC will continue to strive for positive change that will impact both the business and non-business world alike. We know what matters to make that happen - Our SPIRIT Values matter. Our Team members matter. Our communities and our planet matter. It is KJLC's present and ongoing commitment to be a steward for what matters and we will do that through continuing to carry out and grow our CSP.
Sincerely (and on behalf of the entire Kurt J. Lesker Company® Team),
Kurt J. Lesker IV
