Intro to Residual Gas Analysis: Characterizing Partial Pressures

The precise characterization of pressure in a vacuum system requires the analysis of the residual gases that are present. Residual Gas Analysis (RGA) or partial pressure analysis provides substantially more data than can be acquired by a simple measure of total pressure. The system uses atomic mass units to distinguish atomic and molecular gases in addition to gas compounds such as CO2, fingerprints, pump fluids, and other hydrocarbons. In this webinar the broad range of useful information, including trends in gas composition, outgassing rate, leak detection, and system cleanliness derived from RGA will be discussed. Principles of operation, pressure limits, sensitivity, mass ranges, spectra interpretation, detector placement, start-up and shutdown will also be discussed.

Introduction to High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS)

This course focuses on the theory and practice of High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS). The theoretical side this course covers how HiPIMS differs from other sputtering techniques, the functionalities of a HiPIMS supply, and process parameters of interest. Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) for Thin Film Deposition Process Monitoring

Quartz Crystal Microbalances or QCM's for short, are extremely sensitive mass balances used as an in-situ "system" that enables users to monitor and control the deposition rate of thin film materials using processes including thermal and electron beam evaporation as well as magnetron sputtering. At the heart of the device is a quartz crystal which can be made, because of its piezoelectric properties, to vibrate at a certain frequency. As molecules, from the thin film deposition process, accumulate on the surface of the crystal its vibrational frequency changes, which can be used, when calibrated, as a proxy for film thickness and deposition rate. The microbalance system has several key components. In this class we will highlight each of these components, compare some of the more common options, and provide an outline of how these components all work together.

Vacuum Pumps for Ultra High Vacuum Applications (Part 2)

The achievement of ultra-high vacuum pressures in a research or industrial system requires some extraordinary measures. Accordingly, the vacuum pumps required to reach 10-9 - 10-12 Torr are also extraordinary. In this second session on pumping systems for ultra high vacuum we will build on the system requirements and heroic measures discussed in session #1 and review the range of tools designed specifically to remove or trap the last few remaining gases present at these very low pressures. The course will include details on the operating principles of sputter ion pumps, sublimation pumps, and other techniques that can be employed to reach and maintain UHV pressures.

Annual Christmas Lecture on Vacuum Science & Technology

The concept of the 'demonstration lecture' may have originated with the famous instrument maker Francis Hauksbee, who, in 1705, originated the practice with his lectures to the Royal Institution of Great Britain, in London. As support staff for Isaac Newton, Hauksbee became famous for his pioneering demonstrations of the light emitting properties of electricity, 100 years in advance of the invention of the electric light bulb. The tradition of the Christmas lecture began in 1825 at the Royal Institution, in London, long before formal science education was available for the masses. Originated by Michael Faraday, the lectures focused on a single topic and were an opportunity to share the excitement of science with the learned and layperson alike. In this first annual Lesker U Live Christmas lecture, new for 2020, we will focus on the wonders of vacuum science and technology. Vacuum science has increasingly become an enabling technology for many of the incredible technological advances we enjoy in communications, display, medicine, energy conversion, transportation, and the exploration of the universe.
