Question: Why do most CF flanges have two radial grooves machined into them between the bolt holes?
These are known as leak check slots. However, it is not necessary to spray Helium into these slots to determine if there is a leak in that particular CF joint. The space between the CF flanges is cavernous to Helium around the entire perimeter of the flanges even when they are tightened metal to metal.
