CF flanges are sealed with metal (typically copper) gaskets. This allows a vacuum system that has 100% metal sealed flanges to be baked, and therefore is able to reach ultra high vacuum pressures in the low -10 or high -11 Torr range. It is possible to get a lower base pressure than this, but the baking regimen, cleanliness of the system, after baking processes to lower the base pressure, and the type of gauging used to measure the base pressure have to be considered.
