In a low vacuum application, such as a foreline, a trap caputres gases and vapors while a filter is meant for particulates, and aerosols. Either of these devices can be used to protect the process from outside contaiminates (such as pump oil) or to protect periphial components (such as the pump) from the process. However since some traps have filter media in them, the terms are sometimes hard to seperate. In a high vauum application filters are typically not used.
