Vacuum firing reduces the amount of hydrogen in stainless steel, enabling a better base pressure.  It also reduces the magnetic permeability of austenitic stainless steels for sensitive experiments. Consider vacuum firing if  Hydrogen is the dominant gas of all the residual gas in your vacuum system and you are not satisfied with the base pressure.
