Reactive Magnetron Sputtering: An Introduction
Reactive Sputtering (RS) adds an element of inorganic chemistry to the process of sputtering where metal oxides, nitrides, and other species can be produced, as films, from elemental or compound sputtering sources. This class reviews the rational for reactive sputtering and covers a review of the sputtering process, a discussion of the gas-phase chemistry that takes place during RS, how the process is monitored, compositional control, substrate bias, the effect of magnetic fields, and a general review of the issues critical to successful RS. The class will include an opportunity for Q&A with our technical expert.

REGISTERModeling of Vacuum System Performance
Introduction to Vacuum System Modeling: Vacuum systems must be designed to meet certain fundamental criteria, such as base pressure, time-to-pressure, and leak tightness in order to achieve the process goals for which the systems were created. Given the complexity and cost of modern vacuum systems, predictive performance models are useful in the specification of the active (pumps, sensors) and passive (tubulations, valves) components of a vacuum system, minimizing errors, identifying technical challenges, and hopefully minimizing cost. In this webinar we will review some fundamentals of vacuum system design, including outgassing, conductance and pumping speed, review simple approaches to characterizing vacuum systems, and show some advance models which enable more wide-ranging analysis.

REGISTERVacuum Engineering for Fusion Energy
Fusion reactors will need vacuum systems that can stand up to extreme heat, intense plasmas, reactive ions and radicals, and neutron damage. This webinar will compare the operating pressures, temperatures, and pumping speeds required by several leading fusion designs, including magnetic-confinement, inertial-confinement, and magneto-inertial approaches. We will review current options for materials, surface treatments, and system design that can help standard vacuum chambers and parts work in these harsh conditions.
