Apiezon® W40 is a versatile, chemically inert wax compound that is solid at ambient temperatures, and is used for rigid permanent or semi-permanent joint sealing. Apiezon® W40 wax has “gettering” qualities, like their greases, coupled with high purity and clean meltdown properties allow this wax to absorb greasy or chemical impurities on metal/glass surfaces. Apiezon® W40 wax is used in the manufacturing of silicon transistors and integrated circuits due to its resistance to etching fluids (hydrofluoric, nitric, and acetic acids). Apiezon® W40 wax is also used as a protective coating for printed circuits to ensure protection of the copper circuit from acid etching processes and air oxidation. Apiezon® W40 wax also serves as an excellent mounting media for permanent and temporary adhesives for silicon chips. The wax can be dissolved in a hydrocarbon or chlorinated solvent (or melt and apply directly), applied, and a thin film of wax forms after the solvent evaporates.
Features
- Developed for applications where the sealing medium must flow into or around a joint in a system kept below wax-flow temperature
- Similar to Apiezon® W wax, but the softest out of all the Apiezon® waxes
- Low melting point (45 °C) allows it to be melted with hot water
- Application to heat sensitive joints
- Jointing and mounting media
- Etch fluid resistant

Vacuum Properties
Apiezon® W40 wax is an effective sealant for vacuum systems down to 10-7 torr at ambient temperatures. The wax is also effective with vacuum systems that run at small positive pressures. Apiezon® W40 wax offers as a superior waterproof medium to provide a complete seal against liquid water, water vapor, and atmospheric moisture in vacuum systems. Its low vapor pressure characteristics allow Apiezon® W40 wax to be used in thin film deposition applications as a protection against contamination of the thin film deposits.
It is strongly recommend using all fluids and greases at the time of receipt, however when storage is necessary, rotate older stock into use first and observe the recommended parameters listed below.
Apiezon
All Apiezon products have a shelf life of 10 years if unopened in their original container and stored at ambient temperatures. If the product has been opened, resealed and then stored in clean, dry, dark environment under ambient conditions in the original container, it should last up to 10 years, but this is not guaranteed.
